How to Find a Grave

A Shady Lane burial location may contain four useful pieces of information: section, avenue or walk, lot, and grave. You can use them in that order.

01

Search the Burial Directory

Search by surname or full name. You can also search a section, avenue, lot, or grave when you already know part of the location.

02

Read the location from left to right

Section identifies the major cemetery area. Avenue/Walk narrows the location. Lot identifies the family or numbered plot. Grave identifies the individual burial position when recorded.

03

Use the original map scan

Open the section map and locate the avenue, street, walk, or lot. Historical maps can be dense, so zooming the image is often helpful.

04

Expect historical variation

Older cemetery records and maps may contain abbreviations, renamed paths, incomplete fields, or handwriting. The site preserves what is indexed and flags uncertain material for review rather than silently changing it.
